Ohh Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv – a lively bubble that is quit different from the rest of Israel.

Tel Aviv was the first stop on my travels to the Near East and, therefore, my first touchpoint with a very different world. My sister and I arrived in the middle of the night and directly had an unexpected experience: our taxi driver called himself an “Energy Healer” with the unique profession to discover “the truth about life”. While he was driving us to the city center he explained some of his core beliefs to us such as “To pray for is not the actual prayer – Praying is not the words you speak but what your heart truly feels”. To be honest, I didn’t catch all of his thoughts and anecdotes (yes, he was giving Bar Rafaeli a ride, but what exactly was the story behind the guy accompanying her?), still, I understood one thing: EVERYTHING can happen in Tel Aviv! 🙂

When comparing Tel Aviv with other places such as Jerusalem, Bethlehem or Akko, the city can be described as an easy access to this new world. Tel Aviv is even called a “bubble” to emphasis the fact, that the city is quit different and separated from other parts of the country. The city is a lively combination of entertainment, shopping malls, exotic markets, nightlife, beaches and different kind of restaurants and reminds me of a miniature Los Angeles. And also the people living in Tel Aviv are more open, young, tolerant and cosmopolitan.

In the pictures I want to show you a very different part of Tel Aviv – Old Jaffa. The word Jaffa means “beautiful” and the city has a long history that was even part of both the Old and New Testament. The pictures might give you a feeling of the different facets of Tel Aviv – a city that is a must see for all explorers! 🙂

Tel Aviv war der erste Stop auf meiner Reise in den Nahen Osten und somit das Tor in eine ganz andere Welt. Meine Schwester und ich landeten mitten in der Nacht und die Besonderheit der Stadt wurde uns direkt auf dem Silbertablett reserviert: unser Taxi Fahrer war ein Unikat par Excellence. Laut Visitenkarte war unser neuer Freund hauptberuflich “Energy Healer” und auf der Suche nach “the truth about life”. Während der Fahrt in die Stadt stellte er uns ein paar seiner Grundsätze vor (“To pray for is not the actual prayer – Praying is not the words you speak but what your heart truelly feels”, etc.). Wir verstanden nicht alle seine Botschaften und Anekdoten (z.B. ist wohl Bar Rafaeli seine Kundin im Taxi gewesen, die pikanten Details haben sich mir aber nicht vollkommen erschlossen!?), er machte jedoch klar, dass in dieser Stadt ALLES möglich ist!

Im Nachhinein war Tel Aviv verglichen zu anderen Orten wie Jerusalem, Akko oder Betlehem ein sanfter Einstieg und wird nicht umsonst häufig als andersartige “Bubble” beschrieben. Die Stadt ist eine vielfältiger Mix aus Entertainment, Einkaufszentren, exotischen Märkte, Nachtleben, Stränden und Restaurants und erinnerte mich zum Teil an eine Miniaturversion von Los Angeles! Verglichen mir anderen Regionen im Land sind auch die Einwohner aufgeschlossen, jung, tolerant und kommen zumindest gefühlt von überall aus der Welt!

Auf den Fotos möchte ich Euch jedoch einen ganz anderen und historischen Teil von Tel Aviv zeigen – die Altstadt Old Jaffa. Jaffa bedeutet “beautiful” und hat eine lange Vorgeschichte, die sowohl im Alten als auch im Neuen Testament aufgegriffen wird. Die Altstadt steht stellvertretend für das Facettenreichtum von Tel Aviv, eine Stadt die immer einen Besucht wert ist!
