Who didn’t hear it as a child: the story of the little tiger and the little bear on their journey to Panama?! When Lufthansa asked me, whether I wanted to fly to Panama with them, I immediately had to think of the famous joyous exclamation: “Oh, how beautiful Panama is!”

Before I started researching Panama, I did not know much else though. And when I started asking around in my well-traveled circle of friends, I had to realize that none of them had actually been to Panama before. When I at last looked up the famous children story itself to find out why Panama was “oh, so beautiful”, I was surprised to read that even tiger and bear never actually made it there. Maybe some of you feel the same way: one knows the sentence from the children’s book and the Panama Canal. Concentrating on past history lessons, one might even find Panama on the map. But what else is there to know about Panama?

During my internet research I realized quickly that Panama has a lot to offer. I was looking forward to the trip more and more!  Now, I have been back from my trip for two weeks already. Unlike the tiger and the bear (and let’s not forget the tabby dug) I had reached my destination – Panama – had explored it and made it home save. And unlike them I can now say with all my conviction: “Yes! Oh, how beautiful Panama is!!!”

Today I want to tell you why Panama should be on everybody’s bucket list.

PANAMA CITY

Panama City is a city of contrasts. Nearly one fourth of the country’s population lives in and around the capital. From the airplane you can already see the skyscrapers towering over the Pacific’s shore.  The skyline could make the drowsy air passenger think that (s)he was approaching New York. However, once you leave the airplane you would recognize your mistake and the differences – tropical temperature, palm trees between the tower buildings. We landed in Panama City during dusk and drove past the twinkling downtown in the dark. If you drive around the bay and leave downtown Panama City behind you, you reach the old town. That is where our hotel was (see below). When you are standing at the bay in the old town, you have a beautiful view of the downtown area and vice versa. However, these two parts of the city could not be more different. The modern city center offers spectacular glass buildings with amazing views (e.g. Hard Rock Café), roof top bars and roof top pools (e.g. on top of the Hilton Hotel or from the Panaviera bar in the Ocean Sun Casino). Here there are air-conditioned malls featuring international luxury brands. The old town, however, has the charm of old colonial cities with a mixture of indigenous, Spanish, and American influences. Here you can find boutique hotels and small cafés, but also a price level that can match the one of Europe and the US. While traffic is frequently stuck in the small alleys, you can explore the old town easily on foot and we were told that it is generally save. You can stroll along the promenade with a view of the skyline. We had a car and a guide (Richard, a true stroke of luck) for the day in the city and, thus, we were able to see more than just the main touristy attractions. Most of the local population lives outside the city center and we saw some of the residential areas of Panama City that reminded me a bit of Cuba and visited a local market, where bananas and pineapples arrived in truckloads. Lastly, we were in for a treat: a helicopter ride over the city and all the way along the Panama Canal up to the Caribbean side. It was my first time in a helicopter (a tiny and open one as well!!) and I was thrilled! I am a freedom-loving person and against my pre-flight worries, I wasn’t scared at all. I loved it!!! Having the view of the skyline from up in the air while the wind is blowing around your head – it was amazing! Over the jungle the pilot flew low and we whooshed only meters over the rivers between the jungle’s trees. I can promise you one thing: It wasn’t the last time that you can see me on a helicopter. Maybe I already relapsed in the past two weeks. 😉

American Trade Hotel

We stayed for four nights at the American Trade Hotel while we were in the city. The boutique hotel is situated in Casco Vjejo and I was happy when I realized that not only the sea but also all the cafés and restaurants that I picked out before we came here were in walking distance. The hotel was beautifully restored and had so many cozy corners that were decorated in an individual style that I couldn’t decide where to get comfy first. Some of my favorite spots were definitely the tiled inner courtyard with small tables under sunshades, and the roof terrace with a pool and a view! 🙂 I can only recommend to you to stay in the old town if you ever come to the city and the American Trade is definitely a great option! 🙂

EL VALLE DE ANTON (ANTON VALLEY)

Approximately two hours away from the city you can find the Anton Valley. The valley is situated in a volcano crater and has some nice trails for hiking and waterfalls. Also, to our surprise here we found the biggest supermarket we ever saw in Panama and even a gym – how about that? We regretted at that moment that we had purchased totally overpriced 18$ sandwiches at the hotel that morning – you always have to be prepared to get lost in the jungle without having to move on to cannibalism right away… 😉 We only had time to visit one waterfall and to do one “hiking trail”(Note the “…” – the trail was only a five minutes stroll and lacked the true jungle experience further ridiculing our overpriced food supply). The waterfall was beautiful and there were some nice rope bridges. If you want to go hiking properly, though, I recommend doing some more research in advance… 🙂

SAN BLAS ISLANDS

During my Panama research I simply couldn’t make up my mind whether I wanted to spend the relaxing part of our trip on San Blas or Bocas del Toro. Ask anyone: I have never been good in decision-making! And what to do if you can’t make up your mind: do both!! 😉 Since our time in Panama was limited, Lufthansa and I managed to organize a day trip to San Blas from Panama City – and I did not regret doing it! The tiny “harbor” from where the boats leave to the islands is a three-hour drive away from the city with some rocky parts. However, most of the time you have an amazing view of the jungle while driving through a hilly area. With a small speed boat and our indigenous Kuna guide we passed the main islands, where most of the local people live (I have never seen that many cute houses crammed on one tiny island) on our 40 minutes boat ride to the Isla Diablo. Here, there are a couple of huts that invite you to stay a couple of hours (or days) in a laid back atmosphere. The next stop was a tiny, tiny island that had nothing but one hut and a couple of palm trees on it. It would not take you two minutes to jog from one end to the other (believe me, I timed it ;)). Since the hurricane had passed by only a couple of days before, the hut’s owner had not returned to the island yet and we had the island all to ourselves – a bit of “Lost” feeling! The next beach was a dream come true for me: we found sea stars (and plenty of them)!!! :):):) The great thing about San Blas is that every island is different and there is a favorite for everyone! You can definitely stay one or a couple of nights and get lost here but it is also doable as a day trip and totally worth it. But be careful: if you want to take pictures (and you will want to take pictures!!!) bring a dry bag – the boat ride can be a bit rough and wet!

BOCAS DEL TORO

Bocas del Toro is a province on the Caribbean side of Panama that is made up out of seven main islands. You can reach the biggest island and Bocas del Toro Town with a plane from Panama City in an hour. Bocas del Toro town has the laid back vibe that most Caribbean islands are known for and is a popular destination with backpackers. We stayed on one of the smaller islands – Isla Pastores – where there was only one hotel (the Finca Vela Lodge that has only three apartments). The Isla Pastores is the kind of place that has become rare today: it is rather isolated from the rest of the world and at night you hear nothing but the animals around you and the Finca’s own small waterfall. Bocas has several nice sandy beaches that invite you to stay and relax and sometimes to have a cocktail or fries and listen to reggae music.  Some of the main spots are the Sea Star Beach, where you can have a stroll and look for sea stars (however, we found more from our hotel’s jetty) and drink cocktails, the Red Frog Beach and you can go dolphin spotting in Dolphin Bay. The Finca Vela Lodge did not have a beach and you had to take the boat somewhere else (e.g. 20 minutes to Sea Star Beach) but you can also go swimming directly from the jetty or in the amazing infinity pool.

Bocas is the perfect destination for both backpackers looking for a place to chill (Bocas Town) and honeymooners aiming more for a romantic get-away (resorts on the smaller islands, e.g. Finca Vela Lodge on Isla Pastores). But bring a big supply of insect repellent and something with long sleeves  – you share this paradise with some vicious sand flies (those of you who follow me on snapchat might have seen my war wounds!).

HOW TO GET THERE?

Lufthansa has a direct flight from Frankfurt to Panama City. When you travel as much as I do lately, you learn to appreciate a comfy plane seat. For me the plane has to be not only means of transportation but also office (there is wireless on several Lufthansa flights now ;)), bed and the rare occasion on which I get to relax. I had the amazing opportunity to fly Business Class with Lufthansa and thus I actually managed to sleep most of the 11-hours flight back – which was perfect because I had been a bit sleep deprived and once we landed I had to get right to the Victoria’s Secret Show. 🙂

I travel a lot and I’ve been so lucky to have seen numerous places in my young life: many I liked, some I loved and few that totally took me by surprise! Panama fits both of the last categories. 🙂 In only a view days I have seen so many different sides of Panama and have experienced so much – the modern city, breathtaking beaches, tropical jungle. I fell in love with this country and to be honest I was surprised by how much I loved it! Tourism in Panama is starting to pick up but it is far from what it is in some of the neighboring countries. Why that is the case, I cannot understand! I can only say that I am glad to have visited this amazing country while it was still less crowded by tourists – because one day it will be, I am sure! Ohh, wie schön ist Panama…! Wer von uns kennt sie nicht: die Kindergeschichte vom kleinen Tiger und dem kleinen Bär auf ihrer Reise nach Panama?! Als Lufthansa angefragt hat, ob ich mit ihnen nach Panama reisen möchte, musste ich sofort an den bekannten Ausruf „Oh, wie schön ist Panama“ denken. Bevor ich mit der Recherche begonnen habe, wusste ich jedoch ehrlich gesagt nicht viel anderes über dieses Land. Und als ich in meinem durchaus reiseaffinen Freundeskreis nachgefragt habe, musste ich feststellen, dass noch niemand in Panama gewesen ist. Als ich zuletzt in der Kindergeschichte direkt nachschlug, weshalb genau Panama denn „oh, so schön“ sei, musste ich zu meiner Überraschung feststellen, dass auch der kleine Tiger und der kleine Bär nie ihr Reiseziel erreicht haben. Vielleicht geht es vielen von euch ähnlich: man kennt den Ausruf aus dem bekannten Janoschbuch und den Panamakanal. Mit etwas Konzentration auf den zurückliegenden Erdkundeunterricht findet man das Land auch noch auf der Weltkarte – aber was hat es mit Panama sonst auf sich?

Schon während meiner Internetrecherche habe ich schnell gemerkt, dass Panama viel zu bieten hat und habe mich immer mehr auf diese Reise gefreut. Jetzt liegt meine Rückkehr aus Panama schon zwei Wochen zurück. Anders als der Tiger und der Bär (und nicht zu vergessen die Tigerente) habe ich mein Ziel – Panama – erreicht, erkundet und es wieder nach Hause geschafft. Und anders als der Tiger und der Bär kann ich jetzt mit voller Überzeugung sagen: „Ja! Ohh, wie schön ist Panama!“ Heute möchte ich euch erzählen, warum Panama als Reiseziel auf jedermanns bucket list stehen sollte.

PANAMA CITY

Panama City ist eine Stadt der Kontraste. Fast ein Viertel der Landesbevölkerung wohnt in und um die Hauptstadt des Landes. Schon aus dem Flugzeug sieht man die imposante Skyline am Rande des Pazifiks aufragen. Die modernen Glashäuser könnten den verschlafenen Passagier glauben lassen, man sei im Anflug auf New York. Steigt man jedoch aus dem Flugzeug merkt man schnell die Unterschiede: die tropischen Temperaturen, die Palmen die zwischen den Glastürmen stehen. Wir sind in der Abenddämmerung in Panama City gelandet und im Dunklen an den Lichtern der Stadt vorbei gefahren. Umrundet man die Bucht an der Downtown Panama City liegt, kommt man in die Altstadt, wo auch unser Hotel lag.  Von der Altstadt aus blickt man über das Wasser auf die Hochhäuser und andersherum. Die beiden Stadtteile könnten jedoch nicht unterschiedlicher sein.  Das moderne Zentrum besticht durch spektakuläre Glasbauten mit grandiosen Ausblicken (z.B. vom Hard Rock Café aus), Rooftopbars und Rooftoppools (z.B. im Hilton Hotel oder in der Bar Panaviera im Ocean Sun Casino). Hier gibt es klimatisierte Shopping Malls mit internationalen Luxusmarken. Die Altstadt hingegen hat den Charme alter Kolonialstädte mit ihrer Mischung aus lokalen, spanischen und amerikanischen Einflüssen. Hier findet man Boutique Hotels und kleine Cafés, aber auch ein Preisniveau, das dem in Europa und den USA in nichts nachsteht.

Während sich der Verkehr in den kleinen Gassen häufig staut, kann man die Altstadt bequem zu Fuß erforschen und mit Blick auf die Skyline an der Promenade am Wasser entlang schlendern. Der Großteil der einheimischen Bevölkerung wohnt außerhalb der Stadt. Wir hatten einen Fahrer und einen Guide (Richard, ein echter Glücksgriff!) für den Tag in Panama City und konnten so neben den typischen Touristenzielen auch etwas von den Wohngegenden Panamas erforschen und einen lokalen Markt besuchen, auf dem die Bananen und Ananasse Lastwagen-weise angekarrt wurden. Zuletzt hatte Lufthansa noch ein besonderes Highlight für uns vorbereitet: einen Helikopterflug über Panama City und entlang des Panamakanals bis zur karibischen Seite! Für mich war es das erste Mal im Helikopter (noch dazu offen!!!) und ich war begeistert! Ich bin ein Freiheits-liebender Mensch und entgegen meiner anfänglichen Befürchtungen hatte ich in der Luft gar keine Angst, sondern war geradezu glückselig! Der Anblick der Skyline aus der Luft während einem der Wind um die Ohren pustet war einfach einmalig. Und über dem Dschungel ist unser Pilot hinabgestiegen und direkt über dem Wasser der Äste des Panamakanals zwischen den Bäumen des Regenwaldes entlanggerast – ein unglaubliches Gefühl! Eins kann ich euch versprechen: es ist zwar das erste aber sicherlich nicht das letzte Mal, dass ihr Bilder von mir aus einem Heli sehen werdet! Vielleicht bin ich tatsächlich schon rückfällig geworden. 😉

AMERICAN TRADE HOTEL

Während unser Zeit in Panama City hatte Lufthansa uns für vier Nächte im American Trade Hotel einquartiert. Das Boutique Hotel liegt im Stadtteil Casco Viejo und zu meiner großen Freude durfte ich feststellen, dass nicht nur die Promenade am Meer sondern sämtliche Cafés und Restaurants der Altstadt, die ich mir zuvor ausgeguckt hatte, fußläufig in wenigen Minuten zu erreichen waren. Das Hotel ist liebevoll restauriert und hat so viele gemütliche Ecken zum Sitzen, Kaffeetrinken und Arbeiten, dass ich mich gar nicht entscheiden konnte, wo ich am liebsten sein wollte. Zu meinen Lieblingsplätzen gehörten sicherlich der gekachelte Innenhof mit kleinen Tischchen unter Sonnenschirmen und die Dachterrasse mit Pool und Blick über die Altstadt. Ich kann jedem, der die Reise nach Panama antritt, nur wärmstens empfehlen ich ein Hotel mit persönlichem Charme in der Altstadt zu suchen und das American Trade Hotel ist hier sicherlich eine der besten Adressen! 🙂

EL VALLE DE ANTON (ANTON VALLEY)

Circa zwei Stunden mit dem Auto von Panama City entfernt befindet sich das Anton Valley. Das Tal liegt in einem Vulkankrater und besitzt mehrere Wanderwege und Wasserfälle in tropischen Regenwald. Außerdem gibt es hier eine überraschend moderne Stadt mit dem größten Supermarkt, den wir in Panama gesehen haben (wie wir es bereut haben, dass wir uns in unserer morgendlichen Verzweiflung überteuerte 18$ Sandwiches im Hotel gekauft haben – aber man muss ja immer darauf vorbereitet sein, im Dschungel verloren zu gehen ohne gleich auf Kannibalismus umsteigen zu müssen) und sogar einem Fitnessstudio ;). Wir hatten nur Zeit für einen Wasserfall und „Wanderweg“. Der Wasserfall selbst hat uns sehr gefallen, der „Wanderweg“ hingegen entpuppte sich jedoch als recht kurzer 5 Minuten boardwalk mit Hängebrücken und ein bisschen haben wir das richtige Dschungel-Feeling vermisst. Wer richtig wandern gehen und tief in den Dschungel eintauchen will, sollte hier vielleicht vorher noch etwas mehr recherchieren…

SAN BLAS ISLANDS

Während meiner Recherche für Panama war ich hin- und hergerissen, ob ich nach Panama City zum Relaxen noch ein paar Tage in San Blas oder in Bocas del Toro verbringen wollte. Fragt meine Familie: ich war noch nie gut im Entscheidungen treffen! Und wenn man sich nicht entscheiden kann, dann muss man wohl einfach beides machen! 😉 Da unsere Zeit in Panama begrenzt war, habe ich es zusammen mit Lufthansa geschafft, einen Tagestrip von Panama City aus nach San Blas zu organisieren – und ich habe es nicht bereut! Zwar ist San Blas eine circa 3-stündige Fahrt über teilweise holprige (aber mit wunderschönem Ausblick auf den wolkenverhangenen Dschungel) Straßen von der Hauptstadt entfernt, aber das Archipel aus 40 Inseln lässt sich gut auch an einem Tag und ohne Übernachtung erkunden (Natürlich nicht alle 40 Inseln, aber mit etwas Recherche kann man sich ein paar besondere Schmuckstücke aussuchen :)). Mit einem kleinen Speed Boot und unserem einheimischen Kuna Guide sind wir zunächst 40 Minuten vorbei an den Hauptinseln, auf denen auch die meisten Kuna wohnen,  zur Insel Isla Diablo gefahren. Hier gibt es in tiefen-entspannter Atmosphäre auch ein paar Hütten, in denen man übernachten kann. Als nächsten Stopp hatte unser Guide eine Insel auserkoren, auf der es neben einer einzigen kleinen Hütte nichts als Palmen gab und die man innerhalb von zwei Minuten von einem zum anderen Ende ablaufen konnte. Da der Hurrikan erst an den Tagen zuvor abgezogen war und die Inseln zwischenzeitlich gesperrt waren, hatten wir die Insel ganz für uns alleine – ein Hauch von ‚Lost’! Und am nächsten Strand erfüllte sich ein Lebenstraum von mir – SEESTERNE!!!!!!! Das besondere an San Blas ist, dass jede der kleinen Inseln seinen ganz eigenen Charme hat und jeder kann sich seinen kann persönlichen Liebling ausgucken! Aber Achtung: wer Fotos machen will, sollte einen Drybag mitbringen – man wird bei der Bootsfahrt ganz schön nass!

BOCAS DEL TORO

Bocas del Toro ist eine Provinz auf der Karibik-Seite Panamas zu der neun Hauptinseln gehören, die sich mit dem Flugzeug in unter einer Stunde von Panama City aus erreichen lässt. Die Hauptinsel, auf der auch Bocas del Toro Stadt liegt und wo sich der Flughafen befinden, hat den typischen laid-back Vibe der Karibikinseln und  ist ein beliebtes Ziel bei Backpackern. Wir haben auf einer der kleineren Inseln, Isla Pastores, gewohnt, auf der es nur ein Hotel – die Finca Vela Lodge mit nur drei Appartements – gibt und die einer der heute selten gewordenen Orte ist, an denen man sich noch vollkommen vom Rest der Welt abgeschnitten fühlt und wo man nachts nur die Rufe der Tiere hört. Bocas besticht durch Sandstrände, die zum Entspannen einladen und an denen auch mal die Reggae Musik der anliegenden Bars und Imbissbuden weht, während ab und zu ein Boot beladen mit Bananen zur Verpflegung vorbei kommt. Zu den beliebtesten Zielen, die sich per Boot erreichen lassen, gehört der Bocas del drago (Seesternstrand), an dem man entlang laufen und Seesterne suchen (wobei wir mehr vom Steg unseres Hotels aus gefunden haben) oder Cocktails trinken kann, der Red Frog Beach und Delfine Spotting im Dolphin Bay.

Bocas ist der perfekte Reiseort sowohl für Backpacker auf der Suche nach karibischer Entspannung (Bocas Stadt) und romantische Flitterwochen abseits des Massentourismus (Resorts auf den kleineren Inseln, z.B. Finca Vela Lodge auf Isla Pastores). Aber bringt euch einen großen Vorrat an Insektenspray mit! Ihr teilt die Idylle mit bösartigen Sandfliegen (diejenigen von euch, die meinem Snapchat  folgen, kennen meine Kriegswunden!).

HOW TO GET THERE?

Lufthansa bietet einen Direktflug von Frankfurt nach Panama City an. Wenn man so viel reist wie ich es momentan tue, lernt man mit der Zeit wie wichtig es ist, sich auch im Flugzeug wohl zu fühlen. Für mich ist das Flugzeug nicht nur Transportmittel, sondern Büro (es gibt auf vielen Lufthansaflügen auch Wlan ;)), Bett und die seltene Gelegenheit zu entspannen. Ich hatte die großartige Gelegenheit Business Class zu fliegen, so dass die 11 Stunden Flug tatsächlich wie im Flug vergangen sind und ich nach langer Zeit einmal wieder acht Stunden Schlaf bekommen habe.  🙂

Ich reise viel und habe bereits zahlreiche Orte gesehen, die mir gefallen haben, einige die ich geliebt habe und manche, die mich vollkommen überrascht haben! Panama gehört für mich in die beiden letzten Kategorien. 🙂 In wenigen Tagen haben wir in Panama so viele total verschiedene Dinge gesehen und erlebt – alles von hochmoderner Großstadt, über traumhafte Strände bis hin zum tropischen Dschungel. Ich habe mich in dieses Land verliebt und das Ausmaß meiner Begeisterung hat mich ehrlich gesagt selber überrascht! Der Tourismus in Panama kommt zwar langsam in Schwung, gleicht aber noch lange nicht dem Ausmaß an Tourismus in anliegenden Ländern. Warum das so ist, ist mir ein Rätsel! Ich kann nur sagen, dass ich froh bin dieses großartige Land gesehen zu haben, so lange es noch nicht von Touristen überfüllt ist – denn der Tag wird kommen, da bin ich mir sicher! Also: packt eure Koffer und los geht’s! 🙂 xx Leonie
